What you should do if you are pulled over.

  1. Pull to the right side of the roadway. Do not stop in the middle of the road.
  2. Stay calm.
  3. Stay in the vehicle. Do not exit the vehicle unless the officer tells you to do so.
  4. Roll down the window. The officer will explain everything to you once he or she is able to speak with you.
  5. Place your hands on the steering wheel and do not move them until the officer tells you to.
  6. Be polite with the officer.
  7. When the officer asks for documents, do not make quick movements when retrieving them. A traffic stop is one of the most dangerous things that an officer does, so don’t make it more stressful on the officer than it already is.
  8. Don’t argue at the stop. If you want to argue, you will have a chance to do so in court.
  9. After the officer returns you your documents and releases you, do not pull away from the stop until the officer is back in his vehicle.
  10. Slowly merge back into traffic when leaving the stop.
