What you should do if you are pulled over.
- Pull to the right side of the roadway. Do not stop in the middle of the road.
- Stay calm.
- Stay in the vehicle. Do not exit the vehicle unless the officer tells you to do so.
- Roll down the window. The officer will explain everything to you once he or she is able to speak with you.
- Place your hands on the steering wheel and do not move them until the officer tells you to.
- Be polite with the officer.
- When the officer asks for documents, do not make quick movements when retrieving them. A traffic stop is one of the most dangerous things that an officer does, so don’t make it more stressful on the officer than it already is.
- Don’t argue at the stop. If you want to argue, you will have a chance to do so in court.
- After the officer returns you your documents and releases you, do not pull away from the stop until the officer is back in his vehicle.
- Slowly merge back into traffic when leaving the stop.
